Saturday Night Quickie – Favorite Photo #2

For our family vacation last year, we spent a week in Florida. Nothing unusual there. Now some of you may question my sanity regarding the decision to drive from Pennsylvania to Florida and back, with two elementary-school-age children in the car. Surprisingly, no one drove each other to commit any crimes.

Driving affords us the opportunity to make stops along the way if we see anything of interest. On the way home, we decided to stop for the night near Savannah, Georgia to take in a South Atlantic League game between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the visiting Charleston River Dogs.

First of all, I love the names of minor league teams. Sand Gnats! Their mascot is a giant gnat named Gnate.

But the thing that caught my eye at this game was this:

What is going on here? Did they just not have a picture of poor Justin Snyder? All the other River Dogs had real pictures on the screen when they were at bat. Do the Sand Gnats choose one visiting player to pick on every game? Or is this a cautionary image of how your head will balloon up if you take too many steroids?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Nice. Did he forget picture day? At least they didn’t just leave the screen black!
My family is insane enough for road trips together too! Everyone is still alive. You get some of the greatest pictures on those side trips too!

OK, I thought it looked a little familiar. It is a character from the various Mario games, called Toad. He is a humanoid mushroom. They actually have this stuff in Wikipedia! One of my son’s first video games was Mario Kart Double Dash, which he insisted I play with him, so that is probably why it is stuck in my subconscious.

Me again. Interesting that some of your comments came into my email, and some didn’t. What’s up with that? And Canuck, you got one of those movable type errors on your first comment, didn’t you? I’ve had that happen before and then ended up with duplicate comments. The wonders of technology! 🙂

Thanks Tom! Nowadays with all the ways to keep themselves entertained (Gameboys, iPod, DVD player in the car, etc.) it’s not the daunting undertaking it must have been for my parents 30 years ago. Come to think of it, maybe that’s why we only ever did it once, and never again! 🙂
