Timing Is Everything

They say that “hitting is timing”.

According to Warren Spahn, “pitching is upsetting timing”.

Thanks to Cole and Heidi Hamels, we now can surmise that “timing of wife going into labor is upsetting pitching”. Cole was not sharp in yesterday’s 5-4 loss to the Rockies, giving up four runs in five innings.

Ah yes, timing. Cole Hamels, who seems to already have his whole career planned out, was certainly not thinking ahead when he and Heidi decided to engage in some baby-making, presumable back in January. Would it have been that hard to realize that January plus nine months equals new baby smack in the middle of playoffs? Maybe he was assuming the Phillies wouldn’t make it to the postseason?

(alright, yes that last paragraph was typed with tongue planted in cheek, but still…)

As for Baby Hamels, I haven’t been able to find any confirmation this morning that the baby actually arrived. Nonetheless, congrats to the new parents.

Which leads me to wonder why Charlie even decided to have Cole start this game, if labor was that imminent. Sure, we can say that professional athletes should be able to set their personal lives aside while on the field, but who knows how much that might have affected his concentration?

And then there’s Cole’s abysmal record in day games this season: 0-6 with a 5.44 ERA. What’s up with that? His performance in night games is markedly better, at 10-5 with a 3.95 ERA. No wonder he was whining to the press earlier this week about the ridiculous start times of Games 1 and 2.

So why not start Happ or Blanton? Okay, Happ had pitched two innings in the final regular season game on October 4th, but Blanton had last pitched on October 2nd. As it turned out, both Happ and Blanton were used out of the bullpen, so now the Phils have burned through three starters in one game.

That would seem to leave Pedro Martinez as the Game 3 starter, though Charlie has not yet made his decision, saying Blanton is still in the mix, according to phillies.com. Happ says he would be ready too, even though he took a liner off the leg yesterday from the first batter he faced.

Now the series moves to Denver, where the forecast for Game 3 includes temperatures in the 30’s and snow showers (!). That’s football weather, not baseball. At least I’ll be watching from the cozy comfort of my home.

Hope the Phillies are ready for some snow! I’m looking forward to seeing Pedro Martinez start… although, I thought he should’ve retired back in 2004. Enjoy watching from the cozy comfort of your home, I’ll be working the game… possibly freezing.

I have to say I ‘m as affraid of Pedro starting as I was nervous when Myers pitched yesterday….but we have a good team who should be able to handle almost anything…

Oh no, there are so many factors against the Phillies!! I think that maybe Hamels should have been replaced since his mind must have been on his wife and baby. How could it not be?? And then to use two starters out of the bullpen. I wonder if that was planned in case Heidi had the baby during the game. Usuall our SPs are not even in the bullpen to warm up. They sit in the dugout with the rest of the team.
It is so hard to even sit in the stands when it is cold, it must be worse on the field. I sat through an Army Navy football game in twenty degree weather. I froze.
Good luck to your Phillies. Maybe they need long underwear??

I watched a little bit of that game and figured that Hamels was mad when he bolted out of the dugout. Then the announcers said his wife had gone into labor. You’re right – timing is everything! So Pedro is starting tomorrow? I hope it’s not as cold as predicted. Good luck!

Sue,

Ouch on the temperatures! I was in Colorado last year in April and it had snowed the night before. Brrr. This girl that has only lived in Honduras(where is hot and humid) and in Southern California is not used to any snow. I do love the pictures that Don was showing from Colorado though.
.
Have you heard any news on baby and mom?

A big Yes to all you said here.

I think some pitchers could have, in Cole’s situation, pitched in Cole’s Labor Situation…but not Cole Hamels. And yes I wonder that Charlie didn’t realize that, as you said, and not have used him.

We should have won that game. We needed that game. Dang.

And tonight they play in Alaska. Well, ok, not Alaska, but WHO is the idiot that sold Denver a franchise without stipulating that they have a domed stadium, for early season and post season play?

I wonder how Pedro’s neck will react to the cold?

Also, I heard last night on Comcast Sportsnet that Hamels’ baby is named Caled. Cole and Cale, I guess. =)

Ok, the Hamels’ are NOT allowed to have sex in January ever again! Ugh. Yeah, that sucked. Hey, did you hear about the girl who sued Howard for his 200th HR ball? OMG…great parenting…NOT. Just blogged about it.

What!
Baseball players engage in that kind of activity in the offseason !
The good part is that the baby and mom are doing fine, the bad part is that no matter what, that episode was going to play with Cole’s mind even if they induced on an off day.
I know from a guy’s point of view that day can be murder on your mind both in worry for your beautiful wife, and your new baby.
Some might say they should have saved him for Game 3, but he had a job to do, and I bet the team might have made the suggestion, but Hamels shot that down real fast.
By the way, I have a friend who write out West, you know where they are getting snow warnings, and he said that MLB has asked about maybe postponing the game until Sun or Mon since the weather report is more favorable for those days…….I guess we shall see, but at least MLB is thinking ahead about tonight, and the safety of the players and the fans.
