Going Viral

Well, this sucks. My computer seems to have a virus of some kind. I’m currently typing this from the hubby’s laptop, but as I hate typing on laptops, and I don’t know how long it will take to bring my computer back to health, I may be incommunicado for awhile.

Aargh. :-(

**UPDATE**  After 3 1/2 hours (!) on the phone with the Dell technician, the virus is gone. Yay!

If you ever turn on your computer and something called “Control Center” pops up, telling you that you need to update all your security stuff, it’s a virus.

Thanks, Renegade! Although I do already back up all my photos to CD, I am seriously thinking about getting an external hard drive to store photos and music on.
What the “Control Center” does is open when your computer starts up, and there’s no way to close it or make it go away. Also, your usual toolbar and shortcuts don’t appear. It keeps flashing and telling you that you need to buy all sorts of upgrades. I wonder how many people fall for it, and end up “purchasing” security programs that are bogus and probably stealing your personal info.
The people who create this stuff are obviously intelligent – why can’t they use if for good instead of causing problems? I’ll never understand why they get their jollies from this!

Sue,
Glad to hear you got rid of that pesky virus.
It seems almost like every day now we hear a “new” version or a new strain of computer virus or program that can take all our information, or even reprogram our computers and lock us out of them.
It might have benn over 3 hours, but you got it back.
This might be a great time to buy some DVD/CD discs and backup all your pictures and special items saved on the computer.
I know I had a hard drive crash a few years ago and lost a huge bit of stuff I was saving for abour 5 years.
But thank goodness all is well now, and you can again ride the Information Super highway with the rest of us.
