Be Gone, Damn Bug!

The Phillies closed out their Grapefruit League play today with a 7-6 win over the Astros, and will now head north to prepare for Friday’s season opener against those same Astros. In addition to leaving behind sun and warmth (both of which seem to be in short supply around these parts), let’s hope they also leave behind the proverbial injury bug.

The Phils’ spring clubhouse seems to have suffered a heavy infestation – Domonic Brown is out following surgery on a broken bone in his hand; Chase Utley was sidelined the entire spring with a creaky knee, with no timetable for his return to action; and Brad Lidge is likely to go on the DL with pain in his shoulder.

Additionally, Jose Contreras missed a couple days with a scratched cornea, Placido Polanco hyperextended his elbow, and Shane Victorino and Roy Oswalt luckily avoided serious injury after running into Raul Ibanez, and being hit in the back of the neck with a line drive, respectively.

Enough already! Be gone, damn bug!

But “bug” is a vague word. Is the injury bug an insect-bug?
Or a bacteria-bug?
Do we need to call in an exterminator?
Or a vaccinator?
At the moment, I don’t care which it is, I just want this team healthy! Right now!

I am already about to promote the Phillies 2011 MVP Award to go to their Trainers. Those guys will not only earner their pesos in 2011, but they will have to foresee and forego a few late night activities to attend to the rehab and prevention of more injuries.
You know there is a situation when RP Danys Baez has 2 wins in the Spring.
Hopefully it is just a faze or short term dose of mis-guided karma that will disappear by the first NL East series matchup.

Who cares about a bug when the Doc is in. Ok, that’s a bad cliche but Roy will go down as one of the best. any team with him on the mound can endure any bug.

I always pictured the injury bug being more like the Gravelings from Dead Like Me. If you never saw that show, they were gremlin looking things about 3 feet high, invisible to the living who wandered about setting the stage for all of the accidents and disasters that befall us. Regardless, I think you should call in both the exterminator and the vaccinator for good measure. One can never be too careful.
This is a very simple game…

It seems pennant races seem to come down to the teams who can stay healthy. The Phils have enough depth and talent that they should be ok, though. They just have to hang in there until these guy get healthy.
‘Minoring In Baseball’

I am going to be so depressed when Utley does not come out on Opening Day :O( Who will I take 300 consecutive photos of now? Guess I’ll have to settle for Doc ;o)

Renegade – I guess injuries are par for the course when you have the oldest lineup in the majors this season. Hopefully they won’t keep the trainers too busy.

Mark – I like your optimism.🙂 This assumes, however, that Doc himself stays healthy.

Kristen – I’m not familiar with that show, I’ll have to check it out. Network or cable?

Mike – I like your optimism too. Both Lidge and Utley have battled injuries the past few seasons, and the Phils have still had success. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that is the case again this year.

Jenn – Good question! Who will you take aim at is really a matter of who has the best “assets”, hmm?😉

A scratched cornea? Yikes! At least none of these injuries have affected the prized three of the rotation. Those three guys are the keys to the Phillies this season, so hopefully they at least can stay healthy…

Catherine, if it were up to me I’d wrap the starting rotation in bubble wrap when they’re not pitching! I think if they can stay healthy and effective, the Phils can probably weather any other injuries relatively unscathed.

I think what ya need is to call a closer… a real closer… one that won’t be hurt or scare you all the time in the 9th. Oh, and a second baseman named Utley wouldn’t hurt either😉 Don’t worry, ya still got the pitching to git er done.

I heard they are predicting snow for the Phillies Opener. Oh no! Well, good luck! I can’t wait for ours on Thursday but in the meantime today is Opening Day Eve!
